KANJANA

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

IN MATERIALS SCIENCE

Program chair

My research interests center around the development and applications of biomass-derived carbon-based composite materials in energy storage technologies. I am particularly interested in green chemistry. Therefore, the synthesis methods mainly rely on radiation processing along with facile chemical and physical activations. Based on the well-designed process, the textural, chemical and electronic properties of the materials can be modified to best serve the applications.

My research interests span across the fields of the interface between surface science, materials chemistry, electrochemistry, and nanoscience. I aim to develop novel nanomaterials for the next generation of electrochemical sensors and biosensors, energy conversion and storage. The projects often encompass synthesis, and characterization by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, spectroscopy of 2D and 3 D nanomaterials with a particular application.

My research interests lie in the understanding of stress development due to water migration within lingo-cellulose porous materials such as wood. Real-time stress measurement technique and micro-mechanical model has been developed for the understanding of the underpinning mechanisms. I am, particularly, interested in the relation between viscoelastic and mechano-sorptive creep behaviors and collapse due to capillary pressure. The knowledge gained can be applied in wood industries to reduce cost and defects.

DR. UPSORN BOONYANG

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

IN CHEMISTRY

My research interests are in developing functional nano porous materials. Recently, functional porous materials with hierarchically pore, have developed a range of novel techniques to fabricate aligned porous and hierarchically porous materials, and nanostructures. The great challenge is to control the hierarchically meso-, macroporous materials with individual pore size, porous structures, and functionalities for various applications such as drug delivery, protein purification and water treatment.

My research interests are in blend of Polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Epoxidized Natural rubber (ENR) since both polymers have flexible chains that can carry ions.  Electrolytes are very important in energy storage material.  In addition, we also focus on various kinds of adhesives.  In the future, we would see more polymer electrolytes having good adhesive property.

My research interest is focused on development and application of miniaturized sample preparation techniques and optosensor for environmental and food analysis. I intend to apply porous materials and nanomaterials as the adsorbents for the extraction and preconcentration of trace organic contaminants coupled to chromatography and develop selectively fluorometric optosensor based quantum dots for the determination of trace organic contaminants in environment and food.

The development of composite materials from more sustainable sources, cellulosic-based waste, is our research interest. We are focusing on the utilization of aged Rubberwood and Oil palm wood by the incorporation of natural rubber and plastic in order to improve their physical and mechanical properties. This would provide an opportunity to tune the properties of these materials to reach the designated applications.

My research interests fall into the synthesis and development of porous materials with a wide range of hierarchical pore structures, based on both polymer and biomass precursors. There are many huge challenges in designing their textural properties and microstructures for specific applications. Currently, these porous materials, especially porous carbon, have been utilized in various desired applications e.g. energy storage (supercapacitor and battery), catalysts, and gas sensor.
